Man U make their way to Villa Park as they look to continue the pressure on Chelsea in the final months of the title race in England. Villa’s sturdy defence has seen the side not concede in 270 minutes of football, however that all could change with the in-form Wayne Rooney stepping onto the pitch against Martin O’Neill’s men. 24 matches and 21 goals for the England international represents the best form of Rooney’s career as he enters a period of form augmented from even that of his impressive initial months after his debut for Manchester United. Alex Ferguson will hope that his main striking force can continue this form to seek revenge against an Aston Villa side that not only showed Utd how strong they were defensively, but also left Old Trafford with a 1-0 win back in December.
It has been 15 years since Villa defeated Utd on their own soil. While records were broken in Manchester it will still prove an uphill struggle for Villa to emulate the success seen on the pitch against Man U two months ago. The defeat in December marked the only time that Villa have gained the upper hand over Utd in their past 28 meetings. The home side may be in a respectable 7th position in the league, however the side are failing to impress in front of goal at home. As far as league duties go, it’s almost two months since Villa scored in front of their own fans, luckily their defensive strength has slightly made up for this poor run of scoring form.
United have only dropped two points in their last 7 league games but that hasn’t been enough to see the side take top spot as Chelsea continue to prove dominant in this season’s campaign. Only 2 points now seperate the top two sides, and with Chelsea also in action tonight, we could see a new leader in the league table come full time this evening. A fiery response is expected from Manchester Utd to avenge Agbonlahor’s 21st minute winner last time the sides battled.
Villa’s troubles upfront continue as striker Emile Heskey looks set to miss out on the visit of the Red Devils after picking up a groin injury against Spurs at the weekend. A test on the star’s fitness will be held later today, however it looks unlikely he will feature. John Carew is expected to be brought in to replace the injured forward. Warnock misses out again as he recovers from a shin knock. Veterans Giggs and Scholes were rested by Alex Ferguson in the weekend’s emphatic victory however both players are likely to be back in contention for the trip to Villa Park. Rumours are abound that Vidic may be set to return to the United squad however Rio Ferdinand will miss out once again as he continues his four match ban. Tonight’s match should prove an interesting battle in a double header of action that could change the look of the Premiership table.
