Aston Villa and Blackburn come head to hear again as they clash in the Carling Cup tonight. The semi-finals are played over two legs and the teams meet for the second time after a close affair last week. The last result was 1-0 to the Claret team Aston Villa as James Milner scored a crucial goal in the 23rd minute. The teams will now play their last game for a chance to play in the final of the Carling Cup in Wembley.
Aston Villa’s key Norwegian striker John Carew may not appear in the game after suffering a knee injury in training on Monday night – he is training hard to face Blackburn but will surely be a big loss for Villa if he can’t play, and Blackburn will look to capitalize on this. Nigel Reo Coker is still injured with a ankle injuries which forced him to sit out of the game against West Ham this weekend, which ended in a goalless draw at Villa Park.
Villa manager Martin O’Neill is likely to choose Brad Guzan to be the goalkeeper for the game against Allardyce’s men as he opted so far this season to put him in goal above Friedel for cup games. Although Brad Friedel will likely return in the Premiership next week – as he is not injured.
If Villa manage to get the same result tonight as either of their last two games then they will progress to the final of the cup and face the winner of Manchester City vs. Manchester United at Wembley very soon. This is Villa’s first real chance at silverware for over ten years and Martin O’Neill is desperate to give the fans something to look forward to.
But O’Neill is not the only one looking to cup success, Sam Allardyce believes his team still have a chance in the game and says they will do whatever it takes to win tonight.
Another Norwegian will be fit for the game as Mort Gamst Pedersen makes his return to the squad after being injured for Blackburn’s last game against Fuhlam at Ewood Park. Despite the comeback Blackburn are still missing Lars Jacobsen who suffer from a thigh injury, also Vince Grella with a thigh injury and striker Jason Roberts with a niggling knee injury.
Blackburn’s striker Diouf can return to the squad after serving a domestic 3 match ban for Blackburn, despite the down news of Jason Roberts still being injured from his knee.
